Winkler Residence

The Winkler Residence reuses the foundation of the home that stood here before, a deliberate decision made early that kept the project's environmental and economic footprint smaller without compromising what could be built above. The 3,800-square-foot modern home, designed by Sabatini Architects, pairs a primary residence with an adjacent mother-in-law apartment in the same architectural language: multi-generational living that never feels tacked on.

Inside, large exposed wood beams set the structural rhythm of generous gathering spaces and a working kitchen anchored by an island sized to actually live around. Outside, the palette is built to weather Kansas: thermally treated wood cladding, metal roofing, and stucco. The result is a custom home built for two generations, in a material palette chosen to age gracefully and ask less of the owners every year.
